How They Work

Adderall

How It Works:

A once-a-day amphetamine, it puts the brake on areas of the brain responsible for organizing thoughts

Side Effects:

Rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure and, in rare cases, overstimulation. It can also become addictive

Approved to treat ADHD in children 3 and older

Concerta

How It Works:

It keeps neurons bathed in norepinephrine and dopamine, which reduce hyperactivity and inattention

Side Effects:

Headache, stomach pain, sleeplessness and in rare cases overstimulation

Tested/Approved:

Approved to treat ADHD in children 6 and older

Strattera

How It Works:

Approved a year ago, its the first nonstimulant for ADHD; it enhances norepinephrine levels in the brain.

Ritalin

How It Works:

Its active agent, methylphenidate stimulates the brain to filter and prioritize incoming information.

Methypatch

How It Works:

The patch form of the stimulate methylphenidate, it delivers continuous low doses through the skin.

Side Effects:

similar to those for oral methylphenidate

Tested/Approved:

Developed to treat ADHD, but the FDA has deemed drug "unapprovable: until further studies are completed.

Prozac

How It Works:

Approved in 1987, its was the first anti-depressant aimed at regulating serotonin, a brain chemical involved in mood

Side Effects:

Insomnia, anxiety, nervousness, weight loss, mania

Tested/Approved:

Approved to treat depression and OCD in children 7 and older.

Zoloft

How It Works:

It enhances the levels of serotonin in the brain to maintain feeling of satisfaction and stability.

Side Effects:

Upset stomach, dry mouth, agitation, decreased appetite.

Tested/Approved:

Not approved for kids but prescribed based on adult data for depression, anxiety, OCD and others.

Paxil

How It Works:

Like Prozac and Zoloft, it elevates levels of serotonin in the brain

Side Effects:

Nausea, drowsiness, insomnia

Tested/Approved:

Not approved for kids but prescribed based on adult data for depression, anxiety, OCD and others.

Effexor

How It Works:

It target two brain chemicals, serotonin and norepinephrine, to regulate mood.

Side Effects:

Nausea, constipation nervousness, loss of appetite, drowsiness.

Tested/Approved:

Not approved for kids but doctors prescribe if for childhood depression based on adult data.

Depakote

How It Works:

This anti-seizure medication is particularly effective in treating the grandiose, hype agitated state of mania

Side Effects:

Headache, lack of appetite, irritability, nervousness, insomnia.

Tested/Approved:

Not approved for kids but doctors use it to treat for childhood bipolar mania seizure.

Zyprexa

How It Works:

It's a mood stabilizer designed to balance levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain.

Side Effects:

Weight gain, drowsiness, dry mouth, seizure.

Tested/Approved:

Not approved for kids but doctors use it to treat for childhood bipolar mania and schizophrenia.

Lithium

How It Works:

It stabilizes the episodes of elated, intensely joyous moods associated with mania.
